New dual leadership at the Städtische Galerie Fruchthalle Rastatt
Good news for Rastatt's art scene at the end of the year: after several months of vacancy, the management position of Städtische Galerie Fruchthalle, Rastatt's museum for contemporary art, has been filled - with a dual leadership team. Joanne Rodriguez and Jan Philipp Nühlen will be in charge of the museum from January 2024. The management duo have already realized several projects together and applied for the position as a tandem.
"We are delighted that we have been able to recruit this young and professionally experienced team for this responsible task. This will enable the Fruchthalle Municipal Gallery to build on the substantial work of its predecessor, Sebastian Schmitt; after all, the collection needs to be dealt with in a balanced manner on the one hand and with inspiration from outside on the other," the mayor responsible, Mats Tilebein, is convinced.
Joanne Rodriguez, who took up her position at the City of Rastatt on December 1, 2023, is an art and media scholar. As an academic trainee, she curated the exhibition "HERE AND NOW. Anticolonial Interventions" and was subsequently involved in several international exhibition projects as curatorial assistant to the director. She holds an M.A. in Literature, Art and Media Studies from the University of Konstanz and can look back on several study and research stays in Spain and Chile.
Jan Philipp Nühlen will complete the management team in January 2024. During a research traineeship at the Kunstmuseum Bonn in 2022, Nühlen curated the exhibition "German Caviar. The Photographs of the Collection". Together with Barbara J. Scheuermann, he was editor of the inventory catalog "Fotografie im Kunstmuseum Bonn" (Wienand Verlag, 2022). This was followed by positions as Gallery Manager at Kadel Willborn in Düsseldorf and as a freelance art historian. Nühlen also studied Literature, Art and Media Studies at the University of Konstanz and Contemporary Art Theory at Goldsmiths College, University of London.
The new appointment to the management position had become necessary due to the professional reorientation of former gallery director Sebastian Schmitt. In June 2023, the Rastatt municipal council cleared the way for a full-time position to be shared between Rodriguez and Nühlen.
